There has been a second arrest in the New London Public Schools sex scandal, this time a paraprofessional, police said Thursday.
Jevon Elmore, 25, of Bank Street in New London, was arrested on a warrant charging him with second-degree sexual assault, they said. The warrant was served about 10:20 a.m. at his home.
His bail was set at $150,000 and he is scheduled to be arraigned in Superior Court in New London Friday, police said. It wasn’t clear if he posted bail or if he remains employed with the New London school system; police said he was hired as a paraprofessional in the summer of 2018.
The warrant was “in association with an ongoing [New London Police Department] investigation involving New London Public School (NLPS) employees,” Capt. Brian Wright said in a news release.
He said he couldn’t talk about the allegations, including whether the victim was a student, because the warrant is sealed.
Under state law, a person is guilty of second-degree sexual assault if he or she engages in sexual intercourse with a victim who is 13, 14 or 15, disabled or is a patient. Other scenarios include if the victim is under 18 and the offender is in charge of the victim’s welfare or if the victim is a student and the offender is a school employee.
Elmore is the second present or former school employee to be arrested this month. Corriche Gaskin, 35, who was a behavior specialist, was arrested April 5 and again May 7 and charged with second-degree sexual assault, third-degree possession of child pornography, voyeurism with malice, dissemination of voyeuristic material and multiple counts of risk of injury to a minor, police said.
According to the warrant for his arrest, Gaskin sexually assaulted a middle school student in his office and had consensual sex with two adult staff members – with at least some of the acts taking place in Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School. Gaskin has been fired.
