5 Valentine's Day gifts that will help you survive the Sweethearts shortage

How to express your love this Valentines Day? It probably won’t be with Sweethearts Conversation Hearts. You know, the chalky little candies printed with cute messages like “Be Mine” and “Cutie Pie” that date to 1902. It turns out they aren’t being made this year. The original producer of the candy, the New England Confectionery Co., also known as Necco, went out of business in July and was subsequently purchased by Spangler Candy Co. (producer of famed Dum Dums lollipops) last September. Earlier news reports said the company had stated that it would not be able to produce the conversation hearts in time for Valentine’s Day. While Spangler didn’t return our calls for comment, it posted a three-heart response to loyal fans: a photo of three candy hearts printed with the messages “Miss You,” “Wait 4 Me” and “Back Soon.” To help ease the pain and fill the need to communicate your feelings to the one you love, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts has stepped up and introduced Conversation Doughnuts for Valentine’s Day. The doughnuts will be available through Valentine’s Day at Chicagoland Krispy Kreme shops in Homewood, Evergreen Park and Hillside. There’s no substitute for the beloved conversation hearts, but to help make up for the loss, we found a few other ways to let your loved one know how you feel. dsyrek@chicagotribune.com
