The fiery and entertaining John Tortorella is out, so the Rangers need a coach. Could Hartford fans see a familiar face in New York? Lindy Ruff and Alain Vigneault have been cited as the leading candidates by media all over North America. Mark Messier, a special assistant to president Glen Sather, has also been identified as a candidate in New York. But how about these names: Dave Tippett and Paul Maurice. Tippett, the former Whaler, is coach of the Phoenix Coyotes, but his contract expires June 30 and he'll be a popular free agent. Maurice, the Whalers' coach when the team moved, coached in Russia last year and has lots of NHL experience. There's also Wolf Pack coach Ken Gernander, who might be up for a promotion after six years behind the Hartford bench. Imagine Gernander on a staff led by Tippett or Maurice — that's a lot of Hartford hockey history at MSG.
